Craftsense: Commission/Exhibition

In 2004 Bilston Craft Gallery commissioned three artists to produce new work as part of the gallery’s regeneration scheme. The pieces are now on permanent display within the space. The Craftsense commission was specifically concerned with integrating the techniques of local manufacturing industries with the production of a contemporary artefact, and at widening participation for visitors with visual and other impairments. Three sets of jewellery were produced, inspired by the lock-making industry, which were attached to accessible shelves using a locking mechanism adapted from a conventional padlock. The pieces are therefore uncovered, and may be touched or even removed from the shelf and worn by visitors.
